Ugo Bardi's Personal Home Page

Above: the cover image of Ugo Bardi's latest effort: the blog titled "The Proud Holobionts." The concept of "holobiont" was popularized first by Lynn Margulis in 1990, although it is part of the general concept of "symbiosis," well known in biology. It is a very powerful concept that allows us to see the ecosphere as gigantic machine of collaborating organisms.

Welcome to Ugo Bardi's home page. I don't know how you arrived here, but this is a very informal page about me.

So, first of all, a super-short CV. I was a faculty member of the University of Florence, in Italy, where I taught physical chemistry. I retired in 2022, and I remain active in research in subjects such as modeling the cycles of ecosystems, economic systems, networks, and more, fields that I study using system dynamics as a tool.

In addition to academic scientific activity, I am a full member of the Club of Rome and of the Energy Watch group. I am also a registered expert of the United Nations' "Harmony with Nature" program. I write a lot on the Web and my articles have appeared in "The Oil Drum," "Energy Bulletin", "Financial Sense on line" and The Seneca Effect. Possibly the contribution I am best known for is the "Seneca Effect", the name I gave to the idea that things go to pieces much faster than the time needed to assemble them.

My most recent book in English is "Limits and Beyond," a multi-author book which I edited together with Carlos Alvarez, Pereira. Before that, I published "The Empty Sea" (Springer, 2021). Earlier on "Before Collapse," was published by Springer in 2019. In Italian, I published a book titled "Il Mare Svuotato" written together with Ilaria Perissi and published by Editori Riuniti in 2020. Another recent book of mine is "The Seneca Effect: why growth is slow but collapse is rapid" (Springer 2017). Another book of mine that you may find interesting is EXTRACTED: how the quest for mineral wealth is plundering the planet. (Chelsea Green, 2014).

That's more or less it for a short introduction of myself, for more data see this page: Ugo Bardi's CV and personal notes.

My Blogs:

The Seneca Effect. This blog deals with complex systems, civilizations, ecosystems, and the like, with a certain philosophical slant and a sprinkle of mathematical modeling

The Proud Holobionts. A new idea that I am pursuing on the basis of a concept proposed by Lynn Margulis in 1991. A Holobiont is a colony of organisms living together, for instance, a human being.

Chimeras. A very personal blog, where I publish on my (sometimes weird) interpretations of ancient myths, poetry, and literature.

The Sunflower Paradigm. A blog on solar energy where I try to explore the consequences of the expansion of solar energy in our world.

Cassandra's Legacy I kept this blog for ten years, then I had to close it in 2021 because for some reason it had attracted the wrath of the powers that be. But it is all right. It did a good job and the essence of life is movement. Good bye, Cassandra!
